UPDATE ON THE SUPERINTENDENT SELECTION PROCESS
February 22, 2010
This message is the fourth weekly update on the Superintendent Selection Process. As noted in the previous updates, the comments from school district personnel and community members on the selection process is encouraged and may be addressed to school board, through their representatives, or the search consultant using the contact information to follow.
The selection process is moving ahead with two critical weeks upcoming. The semi-finalists have been determined and will be interviewed by the Screening Committee on February 25th and 26th. The committee represents the stakeholders who have a vested interest in the outcome of the selection process and the introduction of the new superintendent of school to the schools and community. The Steering Committee members represent students, paraprofessionals, teachers, building administration, district administration, parents, and representation from the business and professional community. A listing of the Screening Committee members is on the district website. The Screening Committee is currently preparing questions for the six semi-finalists interviews later this week. Upon completion of the
interviews on February 26th, the committee will designate up to four finalists to be interviewed by the Lebanon School Board on March 4th and 6th. Details on the board interview schedule as well as the names of the finalists will be announced in a press release on Tuesday March 2nd.
The school district and community is fortunate in receiving applications from an array of highly qualified and competent educators. The dedication of all the individuals involved in the selection of the finalists for the Superintendent of Schools will result, we believe, in the designation of an individual who will lead the school district forward for the foreseeable future.
The comments, suggestions and insights of school district personnel and community members are important in the selection process. Your suggestion of questions that may be asked of the finalists will be helpful to the Lebanon School Board and are encouraged to be sent to one of the following by March 1st.
OVERVIEW OF THE SUPERINTENDENT SELECTION PROCESS
February 15, 2010
This message is the third weekly update on the status of the Superintendent selection process. As has been noted in the previous updates, the comments from school district personnel and community members on the selection process is encouraged and may be addressed to school board, through their representatives, or the search consultant.
The formal application deadline was Friday February 12th at which time ten fully completed applications had been received. As postmark date is the guide for meeting the application date, more applications are expected the first of this week. The district is fortunate in receiving applications from highly qualified educational leaders with a range of experiences and tenure in central office positions. The search consultant will be interviewing each of the candidates this week and will bring forward recommendations to the Search Committee for up to seven candidates to interview as semi-finalists.
The Search Committee will interview semi-finalists on February 25th and 26th in a non-public session. This initial step in the interview process is customarily held in non-public session to provide a respectful level of confidentiality for the candidates who will come to Lebanon to learn as much about the school district and community as we want to learn from them on their suitability in leading the district in the foreseeable future. In next week'’s update the interview schedule for the finalists will be published; this will be a ‘public’ session of the board.

As you may be aware, the field of candidates for superintendent positions in our state is limited. We are hopeful that of the 20+ letters of interest, a highly qualified field of candidates will be forwarded to the Search Committee for their review and deliberations.

OVERVIEW OF THE SUPERINTENDENT SELECTION PROCESS
February 1, 2010
The following is the first of weekly messages to the school district personnel and the Lebanon community on the status of the selection process for the new Superintendent of Schools. As you read of the progression of this extremely important process through this weekly column, your comments and questions are welcome and may be addressed to the individuals noted at the conclusion of the column.
The Lebanon School Board initiated the selection process in December 2009 with their engagement of Educational Design Group, a New Hampshire based educational consultant group, to coordinate the selection process. The initial aspect of the selection process included the following:
- Developing a profile of the Lebanon School District to be incorporated in the advertisements for the position.
- Establishing the qualifications and personal and professional profile for the desired leader.
- Developing a feasible timeline for the selection process.
- Developing a marketing strategy for developing brochures, announcements and advertisements for the position.
- Scheduling a series of school and community forums to solicit the views of district staff and community members on the qualifications of the superintendent and the educational priorities for the district.
- Establishing a Screening Committee with representation of stakeholders in the school district and community.
To date, a broad advertisement of the position has been completed and over twenty inquires have been received from throughout the nation, although the majority of inquires have been from the New England states. A series of three community forums have been conducted and four of the five forums have been conducted with district faculty and staff. Although the input from the forums have varied slightly, the following priorities for the position are evident:
- The purposeful attention to advancing the standards for student achievement and continuity in curriculum and instruction in the district,
- The development of a strategic plan that will address the priorities (goals and objectives) for the district in the next 3-5 years,
- The expanded engagement of the community within the schools as well as the engagement of the schools within the community,
- The guidance and oversight to the short and long-range planning for the school facilities,
- The development of a sound and educationally adaptable technology infrastructure in the schools, and,
- The sustaining of fiscal accountability.
