Substitutes and Tutors

Substitutes:
The District often needs qualified substitutes for teachers, paraeducators, and nurses. The application form and an information sheet regarding qualifications and the hiring process can be obtained on our employment pages.

In some cases, educational requirements can be met through equivalent experience. Substitutes can choose schedules, schools, and age levels. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis.

The rate for a classroom teacher and paraeducator substitute is $12 per hour.

Substitute nurses are often needed. The rate is $120/day. If you are a nurse who likes children, with at least a couple of free days a week, please consider subbing in our District.

We use the Aesop Automated Sub calling system. Once you have attended an orientation you will be able to log in from your computer or smart phone to see and accept available jobs.

This letter from one of our District Subs:
Dear Dianne,
I've been pondering the current shortage of substitute teachers, particularly in the light of my father-in-law's favorite proverb: "You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar!"

I'll start with the vinegar. "It's really hard to be a substitute teacher! The kids won't trust you and they'll dig in and run rings around you. They'll eat you for lunch! I would never be a sub!!"

Well, I wouldn't be a sub either if that old rap were true. But it isn't! I've only ever had one experience that came close (long ago), and I would handle it differently, and likely successfully, today. I've found elementary children in Lebanon to be warm and hospitable. And, after the first year, we recognized each other and some even remembered my name. Today, after several years of subbing at HSS, I am greeted by name, told family stories in the hallways and given hugs. What life could be sweeter? Contributing to the growth of children and gaining their friendship is the honey in my father-in-law's proverb.

Debbie Hansen, SAU #88 Guest Teacher/Substitute
