School Board Candidate FAQ
About the Role
The Lebanon School Board is a governing body of nine elected community members responsible for setting district policy, approving budgets, approving hires, overseeing and evaluating the superintendent, and ensuring the district meets the educational needs of all students. Board members serve as a public service, bringing community voices directly into district leadership. Board members receive a $1,000 annual stipend.
Eligibility Requirements
To serve on the Lebanon School Board, you must be a resident of Lebanon and at least 18 years of age. You may not hold another incompatible public office or be employed by the Lebanon School District.
Meeting Schedule & Commitment
Regular board meetings are held every other Wednesday evening throughout the school year, which runs from August through June. Occasionally, emergency board meetings are called. No scheduled meetings are held in July. Members are expected to review materials in advance and come prepared to participate.
In addition to regular meetings, board members serve on additional committees, which meet separately and bring recommendations to the full board.
Board members serve three-year terms.
Why Serve?
School board members help determine how Lebanon schools spend public funds, what policies govern student and staff conduct, the long-term vision for facilities and programs, and how the district communicates with and serves its community. No special background is required, just a commitment to Lebanon's students and a willingness to engage thoughtfully with fellow community members.
Can I attend a school board meeting to see if it’s something I want to do?
Yes! All school board meetings are open to the public and available online (non-public sessions can be called for specific, legally defined reasons). We suggest you attend at least one board meeting and one committee meeting before running for School Board. Click here for information on board and committee meetings.
How do I run?
There’s a ten-day candidacy declaration period typically in late January. Declare your candidacy at City Hall. The city and school district also host a meet-the-candidates night a few weeks before the March election, which is held the second Tuesday in March. Check lebanonnh.gov for specific filing dates and requirements.
